Therapy Dog Class

The focus of this class will be on preparing the handler and dog for the therapy environment. Skills include leash handling and walking calmly on a leash, working around medical equipment, loud noises, food, toys, and other distractions, greeting others, and etiquette for visiting handlers and dogs. Topics covered will include stress and calming signals in dogs, infection control, medical ethics, and general liability. We will also discuss the differences between therapy dogs and service dogs. This class will go over the requirements to pass the Delta Society Pet Partners skills test and the Therapy Dogs International test.

This class is not a requirement for either the Delta Society Pet Partners Program or Therapy Dogs International.  However, taking this class will help you to determine whether you and your dog are ready to be evaluated for either program.

The class also includes a copy of The Delta Society's Pet Partners Team Training Course Manual and upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certificate for one free Delta Pet Partners evaluation at CCDTC.

Length: 4-week course (plus an with optional 5th week for a field trip to watch therapy dogs working in either a hospital or nursing home environment)

Cost: $115

Pre-requisites: Obedience I or higher or permission of the Instructor
